Education and Inclusive Learning in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT)

GRAUS recognizes education as a fundamental driver of social development, poverty reduction, and empowerment in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT). The region’s unique geographical conditions, ethnic diversity, linguistic barriers, and limited access to educational facilities often create significant challenges for children, particularly those living in remote hill communities. In response, GRAUS implements a range of education-focused interventions designed to improve access, participation, retention, and learning outcomes for children from marginalized and indigenous communities.

One of the key priorities of GRAUS is increasing school enrollment and reducing dropout rates among children in hard-to-reach areas. Many families in the CHT face economic hardship, long travel distances to schools, and limited educational opportunities, which often result in irregular attendance and early withdrawal from education. GRAUS works closely with communities, parents, school management committees, and local authorities to promote the importance of education and create supportive learning environments that encourage children to remain in school. Through awareness campaigns, community engagement, and targeted support for vulnerable households, the organization contributes to improving school participation and retention.

A distinctive feature of GRAUS’s educational programming is its commitment to inclusive and culturally responsive education. The Chittagong Hill Tracts are home to numerous Indigenous and ethnic communities, including the Chakma, Marma, Tripura, and several smaller ethnic groups, whose children often face language barriers when entering mainstream Bengali-medium schools. To address this challenge, GRAUS promotes mother tongue-based multilingual education and develops or supports the provision of learning materials in local languages such as Marma, Chakma, and Tripura. By enabling children to begin learning in their native language while gradually transitioning to Bengali and other subjects, the organization helps improve comprehension, classroom participation, and academic performance. This approach also contributes to preserving indigenous languages, cultural identity, and traditional knowledge.

Recognizing that many children from remote villages are unable to access educational institutions due to distance, transportation challenges, or household poverty, GRAUS facilitates social lodging and residential support arrangements for underprivileged students. These initiatives provide safe, secure, and child-friendly accommodation where students can live while attending nearby schools. The social lodging model is designed with strong community involvement and oversight, ensuring accountability, child protection, and long-term sustainability. By reducing geographical barriers to education, these facilities enable children from isolated communities to continue their studies and pursue greater educational opportunities.

GRAUS also understands the strong connection between nutrition, health, and educational achievement. Through its School Feeding Programs, the organization provides nutritious meals and snacks to students, helping to address hunger and malnutrition that can negatively affect concentration, attendance, and learning performance. In many vulnerable communities across the CHT, school meals serve as an important incentive for regular attendance while improving the nutritional status of children. The program contributes to better physical growth, cognitive development, and overall well-being, creating a more conducive environment for learning.

Beyond formal education support, GRAUS works to strengthen community ownership and participation in educational development. The organization collaborates with School Management Committees (SMCs), Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs), local leaders, and community-based organizations to improve school governance, accountability, and educational quality. Through training and capacity-building initiatives, community stakeholders are equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to support effective school management, monitor student attendance, and advocate for improved educational services.

Special attention is given to ensuring equitable access to education for girls, children with disabilities, and other vulnerable groups who often face additional barriers to learning. GRAUS promotes gender-sensitive educational practices, awareness on child rights, and inclusive learning environments that encourage equal participation and protect children from discrimination and exclusion. These efforts contribute to creating safer and more supportive educational spaces for all learners.

In addition, GRAUS incorporates life skills, health awareness, environmental education, and social cohesion themes into its educational interventions. Such activities help students develop critical thinking, leadership, communication skills, and awareness of important social and environmental issues affecting their communities. In the context of the CHT, where cultural diversity and peaceful coexistence are essential for sustainable development, these initiatives contribute to fostering mutual respect, inclusion, and community harmony among young people.

Through its comprehensive and culturally sensitive education programs, GRAUS contributes to improving educational access, quality, and equity in the Chittagong Hill Tracts. By addressing linguistic barriers, supporting vulnerable students, promoting nutrition-sensitive education, and strengthening community participation, the organization helps create opportunities for children to realize their full potential and contribute to the long-term development of their communities.
